Bethany’s Totem Pole: "Chief Little Owl"

A 24-foot statue at the downtown entrance to Bethany Beach has been a landmark since 1976. The original statue of Chief Little Owl by Peter Wolf Toth was donated to the Town as part of his “Trail of the Whispering Giants” project. It stood until 1992 when it was destroyed by high winds. The second statue sculpted by Dennis Beach lasted through 2000. Paying honor to the Nanticoke nation, Charlie Clark, a descendent of Little Owl, blessed the latest sculpture in traditional fashion with song, prayer and tobacco. Sculpted from Pacific Northwest red cedar it should last from 50 to 150 years.
